Boston University School of Law: Class 1997

  1. What nationalities do you identify with?

    100% Peruvian

  2.   Where did you grow up?

  3. Long Island, NY

  4. How did you become interested in your passion/work?

My parents were immigrants to this country.  My aunts and uncles and some of my cousins were also immigrants.  I grew up knowing their struggles as newcomers but I never really understood the legal aspects of being an immigrant in the US.  When I started law school, I did not know what area of law I wanted to practice .  I thought maybe family law because I always wanted to help those most in need.  In my 3rd year of law school I signed up for the family law clinic only to find out it was over-subscribed.  My advisor told me to try immigration law because I was bi-lingual.  My first case as a student attorney was an asylum case for someone from....(drumroll)....Peru!!  My native country! My parents' and all my family members' native country.  I learned so much about Peru's political history from that one case. Suddenly, it all made sense.  The struggles that my family, and that other families like mine, went through to live the American Dream.  From that point on, I knew that I would practice immigration law and represent clients who needed me and who were just like my own family.  20+ years later, the passion continues!  It's been a perfect match!

  5. How has being Latinx influenced or shaped your work or life?

With respect to my work, being Latina allows me to relate to my clients' stories in a way that makes me a better advocate for their cause.  With respect to my life, being Latina makes everything more sabroso!

  6. What is one (or more) way in which Latinos enrich our state and/or Nation?

Latinos bring many riches to our country but most of all, I believe we are most known for being hard-working, family-loving, passionate people.  And I believe that description fits me to a T.
